Abstract

The distribution of lipid material was studied by histochemical methods in the 28 cases of the human dental granulomas.
After extraction of the implicated tooth, the lesion was seperated from the root and subjected to special methods for detection of lipids. Staining with Oil Red 0, PAS, and the Acid Hematein were the techniques employed. The results were as follows:
1. In 28 cases of dental granulomas, 21 cases (75. 0%) showed positive reactions in Oil Red 0 staining.
2. The local distribution of lipid in dental granulomas is highest at the zone of inflammatory cells infiltration (85.7%), and, thereafter in order of frequency ratio, at the zone of fibroblasts proliferation (57. 1%), fibrous capsule (47.6%), and epithelial island (23.8%).
3. Phospholipid reaction is noted in 4 cases (19.0%)
4. Sphingolipid reaction is remarkable in foam cells of 2 dental granulomas. 5. Cholesterol cleft is appeared in I case (4. 8%)
6. The morphologic features of lipid are granular, spherical, oval, rod, and various irregular mass shapes.
